Why Choose a Concrete Driveway? When it comes to driveway installations, concrete driveways remain the most preferred option among residential property owners. When installed by a professional concrete driveway contractor, concrete slabs can easily handle heavy traffic.

Homeowners face the real question of whether they should invest their hard-earned money in a concrete driveway. Here are several reasons why a concrete driveway installation is a wise investment:

Durability: A well-constructed concrete driveway can last for 30 to 50 years with minimal maintenance, 50 to 60% longer than asphalt driveways.

Weather Resistance: Concrete is highly resistant to extreme temperatures and sunlight. Unlike asphalt, it does not expand or contract with seasonal temperature changes, reducing the risk of cracks.

Low Maintenance: Concrete is low-maintenance due to its reduced expansion and contraction and strong weight-bearing capacity, which makes it an ideal option for homeowners who want to minimize their annual chores.

Resale Value: Concrete driveways offer an attractive and clean appearance, which appeals to potential buyers. A concrete driveway adds curb appeal and is a solid investment that requires no ongoing repairs. The return on investment for a concrete driveway installation is also substantial. It has been estimated that a new concrete driveway can increase property values by up to 10%. In comparison, the return on investment for paving a previously crushed stone driveway is estimated to be between 50 to 75%. Learn more about investing in a concrete driveway here.

How Much Does a Concrete Driveway Cost?

Concrete driveway installation costs range from $12 to $18 per square foot, with an average price of about $13 per square foot. The size of the driveway, location, slab reinforcement, decorative elements, and whether a driveway removal is required are some factors that can influence the cost.

Other cost drivers that should not be overlooked include the following:

Staining: Adding color to a concrete driveway enhances its aesthetic appeal by matching the home or adding a decorative element to the property. This process is performed before the slab sets, increasing labor and material costs.

Stamping: Experienced concrete driveway contractors can stamp patterns and textures into the slab, giving it a unique appearance. Although it increases the overall square foot cost, the result is a durable concrete driveway with the arrival of inlaid stone, marble, or tile.

Heating: Installing heated coils in the driveway can slow down the melting of snow, reducing the need for shoveling and the risk of slip and fall injuries from ice buildup. Despite the additional costs, a concrete driveway installation remains a cost-effective way to enhance a home. While a basic slab may have a high initial price, it provides a solid return on investment and adds lasting value to the house.
